Ranking the 4 major shortstop contracts given out this offseason
No. 2: Carlos Correa, New York Mets: 12 years, $315 million
Never in the history of baseball have we seen anything like this. Correa, agreeing to a $350 million contract in San Francisco, and getting dressed for a press conference to announce the deal … only to fail the physical and end up with the New York Mets 12 hours later.
Unbelievable.
But the Giants’ loss is the Mets’ gain — and further emphasizes Steve Cohen’s gigantic impact on baseball in only three years as Mets owner. After losing deGrom, he signed: Justin Verlander, Edwin Diaz, Brandon Nimmo, Jose Quintana, Kodai Senga, Omar Narvaez, Adam Ottavino and David Robertson … and then Carlos Correa. All for a combined $806.1 million.
Correa, of course, was the cherry on top for the Mets and the piece that they believe puts them over the top. Did the Mets go higher with Correa’s contract than they would have liked to? Sure. But Cohen has shown he is not afraid to spend, and by signing Correa, arguably makes them the favorites to represent the National League in the World Series.
