Kevin Durant explains why he’s been getting so many technical fouls this year
By Ian Levy
Kevin Durant has been piling up technical fouls at an alarming rate and he’s blaming them on some overly sensitive officiating this season.
Kevin Durant is leading the league with 11 technical fouls this season, a shocking uptick considering it’s still December and he only logged eight all of last season.
When someone on Twitter pointed out his total creeping up and a possible suspension looming, Durant responded directly to say he thinks the refs are treating him a bit unfairly as well.
What did Kevin Durant say about his technical fouls this season?
Durant isn’t the only player who has complained about questionable technicals this season. Ja Morant drew one for talking to a fan courtside and Luka Doncic drew one for yelling at his own teammate.
The volume of his voice isn’t the only thing that’s gotten Durant in trouble. He also drew a technical earlier this week for briefly walking onto the court while celebrating a dunk by one of his teammates.
If (or maybe when?) he hits 16 technical fouls, Durant would be suspended for one game. He would then be suspended for an additional game for each pair of technical fouls beyond that (his 18th, his 20th, etc.). Those suspension thresholds reset for the postseason, but the suspension threshold moves down to seven.
If he keeps this up, Durant could set a new personal record. The most technical fouls he’s received in a season before this was 20, which he did both in 2013-14 and 2019-20.
