Why the Eagles can’t win the Super Bowl: Penalties

The Eagles are 19th in the NFL in total penalties committed (76) and have forfeited 593 yards on the season. Mistakes happen every Sunday, and the Eagles being on the lesser half of the worst in the league for drawing flags is not condemning, but when it rains yellow in Philly games, it pours.

They have committed double-digit penalties on two occasions (10 & 12), and 8 and 7 on two more occasions each in 2022. That is 52 of their 76 total penalties that were committed in just six of their games this season. Again, with how complete, physical, and competitive this team is, it is hard to identify glaring flaws, but a game with 8-12 penalties in the playoffs is enough to show a team to the door in a hurry.

It would be legitimately devastating if one day of lacking discipline was what eliminated this team from the playoffs, but they have as realistic a chance of facing that fate as any other team in the picture.
