Top 5 Worst NFL Coaches, No. 2: Bobby Petrino

Following Louisville’s win over Wake Forest in the 2006 Orange Bowl, Bobby Petrino was off to the Atlanta Falcons. Given what he had done with Brian Brohm and the Cardinal program, it made sense at the moment because it seemed that Petrino had a way of figuring out defenses. So, you can’t blame Arthur Blank for this move.

However, you can now. Petrino was too good to be true. 3-10 in 13 games and a resignation later, the Falcons became a victim of the Cardinal sin. The letters in the locker room only confirmed the issues. Petrino was never fully able to connect with his players and their personalities, and the Michael Vick saga did not help.

Petrino would then have some success at the University of Arkansas, including a Cotton Bowl win, but the motorcycle incident that soon followed further damaged his name and legacy. Petrino’s time in the NFL up to this point has been considered by many as the worst coaching hire of all time, but now, there is one that takes the cake.
