Mets are in trouble: Carlos Correa’s camp won’t budge on contract demands
By Mark Powell
The New York Mets could be in trouble, as Carlos Correa has set a firm stance that he won’t renegotiate his contract.
It’s important to note that the Mets are still looking into Correa’s medical records after a routine physical revealed some concerning information regarding a past injury to his lower leg. Correa suffered said injury in the minor leagues, and even had surgery.
However, the 28-year-old has rarely ran into an issue with the plate in his leg, which was applied in the surgery the Mets training staff is now suddenly concerned about.
Correa has played in 148 and 136 games apiece the last two seasons, barely missing any time. Last year in Minnesota, he was a model teammate despite playing on a short-term deal. This offseason, he’s seeking a long-term commitment, hence the extensive medical conversation.
Carlos Correa, Mets hit another snag
While their initial agreement hit a snag due to medical concerns, Ken Rosenthal suggested that the two sides could restructure said contract to take into account any injury concerns for Correa. Yet, Scott Boras and Correa’s camp aren’t willing to do so at this time:
“But the belief is Correa — whose strong preference is to play for the Mets — isn’t open to restructuring the length or financial terms of the contract. At least three teams have been in contact with Correa’s camp in recent days, but Correa remains committed for now to trying to finalize his deal with the Mets,” Heyman wrote, per the New York Post.
If Steve Cohen, Scott Boras and Correa can put their egos aside, it does make a lot of sense for each to agree to some form of a restructured contract, at least in language to account for injury. Cohen already commented publicly on adding Correa — something he probably should not have done until the deal was final. Boras reneged a contract with the Giants over a similar concern — do he and Correa really want to go through this for a third time?
These are important questions that need answered, and soon.
