There are a bunch of reasons the Michigan Wolverines were upset by TCU in the CFP but these three scapegoats carry the most blame.

Michigan went into the CFP semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl undefeated and favored by a touchdown.

They left absolutely humbled.

TCU took it to the Wolverines. Even though it was close in the end, the Horned Frogs control the game from start to finish. They had an answer for every Michigan comeback attempt and ultimately closed out the 51-45 win.

What happened to Michigan and who is to blame?

Quarterback JJ McCarthy

JJ McCarthy tossed two touchdowns, ran in one more and hit huge deep shots against the Horned Frogs defense as he tried to keep the Wolverines in the game. He did so while trying to evade a pass rush that made a mockery of Michigan’s offensive line for much of the game. He did what he could.

However, the key missteps he made proved he’s very much a young quarterback who needs to continue to develop.

Michigan lost by six points. McCarthy handed 14 to TCU via pick sixes. He also was at the epicenter of two huge fumbles, first the botched handoff at the goal line recovered by the defense and second the game-ending fourth-down botched snap.
