Patrick Mahomes has perfect attitude on Bills-Bengals amid playoff race
By Scott Rogust
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t going to be emotionally invested in the Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.
The NFL is close to entering its final week of the 2022 regular-season, and there is still plenty on the line. Not only are the No. 7 seeds available in both the AFC and NFC, but also the No. 1 seeds and home field advantage. For the AFC, it will be a battle between the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals vying for a first-round bye in the final week. But on the Week 17 edition of Monday Night Football, the Bills and Bengals will do battle to see who can get an edge in the race for the No. 1 seed.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked about the meeting between the Bills and Bengals on Monday night and if he would be watching it. Mahomes had the perfect attitude regarding it, joking that “it’s going to keep me past my bedtime.”
Patrick Mahomes says he won’t be too ‘invested’ in Bills-Bengals game in Week 17
“I try not to be too invested in it. It’s going to be a great football game with two great teams,” said Mahomes, h/t ProFootballTalk. And teams that you’re probably going to see in the playoffs, probably both or one or the other.
“You just try to just watch as a fan like I always do. I mean it’s great quarterbacks, great defenses, great players and as a fan of the game I like watching great football teams go up against each other.”
The first-round bye is a coveted item, as those teams who receive the No. 1 seed can get an extra week to rest and prepare for their upcoming opponents. The last time the Chiefs received the No. 1 spot in the AFC was in 2020, where they made it to Super Bowl 55. However, they lost 31-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Chiefs currently hold the No. 1 spot as of this writing following their 27-24 win over the Denver Broncos this past Sunday.
As for how the Chiefs can clinch the No. 1 seed in Week 18, they will need to root against the Bills. One of the ways Kansas City can clinch the top seed if they defeat the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 18 and if Buffalo loses to Cincinnati in Week 17 or to the New England Patriots in Week 18. Another way they can do so is if the Bills lose to the Bengals and Patriots, and the Ravens beat the Bengals in Week 18.
We’ll get a much clearer picture as to how each of the three teams can clinch home-field throughout the playoffs once we find out who wins between the Bills and Bengals.
