WWE WrestleMania 39 rumors: Vince McMahon departure changed main event
By Scott Rogust
In the first WrestleMania without Vince McMahon, there has been a change to a big match he had planned.
With New Year’s arriving, that means WWE is officially in WrestleMania season. This will be the first one without Vince McMahon running creative, as he retired due to sexual misconduct and hush money allegations reported by the Wall Street Journal. With Triple H now running the creative department for its television programming, one of the planned matches for WrestleMania 39 is reportedly no longer on the table.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch is no longer in the plans for WrestleMania 39.
“Right now, [Lynch vs. Rousey] is not the plan,” said Meltzer, h/t Wrestling Observer. “Things change, like we said.
“I don’t know what Ronda’s match is or Becky’s match but as of today, as of this morning, it was said to me it is very unlikely, and another person who is very well-connected said, ‘I heard it’s dead’ and I asked and it’s not dead because nothing’s dead in WWE, somebody could get hurt and…but definitely not the plan right now.”

Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch reportedly no longer planned for WrestleMania 39
Rousey and Lynch have never had that big one-on-one match on WWE pay-per-view. While they did participate in the main event of WrestleMania 35 back in 2019, the match was a triple threat match also involving Charlotte Flair for both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s championships. Lynch was victorious in that match after pinning Rousey with a rollup.
Last January, Rousey made her return to WWE for the first time since that aforementioned WrestleMania match, and won the women’s Royal Rumble match as the No. 28 entrant. Rousey challenged Flair for the SmackDown Women’s title at WrestleMania 38, but lost. Rousey would win the championship at WrestleMania Backlash in an I Quit match.
After regaining the SmackDown Women’s title from Liv Morgan at Extreme Rules in October, Rousey lost it to Flair on the final 2022 episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
As for Lynch, she recently made her return at Survivor Series this past November after suffering a shoulder injury at SummerSlam in July. Lynch was the Raw Women’s champion entering WrestlemMania 38, where she lost to Bianca Belair.
It’s currently unknown what matches will be planned for both Rousey and Lynch at WrestleMania, but we should get a clearer picture once we get closer to the Apr. 1 and 2 shows.
