Red Sox: 3 next moves after signing Rafael Devers long term
Red Sox moves after locking up Rafael Devers, No. 1: Trade for Justin Foscue
This might seem a bit out of left field as the No. 1 move that the Red Sox should be making after ensuring the future of Rafael Devers, but it’s one that would make a ton of sense for Boston if they were able to work out a trade for Rangers prospect Justin Foscue.
In the case of Boston, the team is going to be shuffling around the infield, as mentioned, after losing Bogaerts to the Padres. That’s likely going to shift Trevor Story to the shortstop spot and leave a revolving door for now at second base. That means they have a need that could be filled by someone like the 23-year-old Foscue, who was the No. 14 overall pick in the 2020 draft out of Mississippi State and was the Rangers’ No. 5 prospect last season.
As for Texas, they have a bit of a predicament with Foscue as he looks like trade bait at this point more than anything. The Rangers have committed massive long-term money to Corey Seager and Marcus Siemien in the middle of the infield, both of which would seemingly block the path — which is not a long one — for Foscue to reach the majors.
This is a trade that could answer needs for both teams. Foscue, who had an .850 OPS with 15 homers in Double-A last season, would give the Red Sox a young, promising talent to pair with Story in the middle of the infield while the Rangers could look at someone like Alex Verdugo, a lefty bat with trade value, or otherwise from Boston.
It would be a win-win and makes a great deal of sense for all involved.
