Several days after entering the hospital, good news was provided regarding Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s status.
On Thursday morning, the first significantly positive news regarding Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was released. According to a teammate, Kaiir Elam, Hamlin is awake.
Shortly after he Tweeted this, the Bills shared that Hamlin is “neurologically intact” and has shown “remarkable improvement” over the last 24 hours with “steady progress” continuing. His agency confirmed this. Ian Rapoport reported that he opened his eyes last night for the first time since the incident and is responsive.
Rapoport also said the family is, “endlessly appreciative of all the incredible medical help that they got on the field, basically how fast it was, the immediacy of CPR for nine minutes, the care at the hospital. It has all essentially saved Damar Hamlin’s life.”
Damar Hamlin’s scary injury
Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on Monday night in the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals. He received CPR on the field and was transported to the Cincinnati area’s only level 1 trauma center, where has has been since Monday.
The game between the Bengals and Bills was postponed given the severity of the situation and the traumatic experience the players on the field had witnessed. The consensus was that neither team wanted to continue without knowing Hamlin was going to be OK.
In the wake of his injury, his charitable effort page has received over $7 million in donations on GoFundMe. Donors include fellow NFL teammates and teams themselves.
As of now, it appears the most likely outcome is the game will not be concluded. Here’s what that means for playoff scenarios.
Week 18 may feel weird as well, as Joe Burrow indicated some of his teammates are unsure if they feel ready enough to play. Hamlin’s recovery is a great sign and a needed sigh of relief.
