Short-term Carlos Correa destinations: Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves lost shortstop Dansby Swanson to the Chicago Cubs. Swanson, a Georgia boy, spoke about his grandfather’s love of the Cubs as a reason why he signed in Chicago.

Still, it stings to lose a homegrown talent, especially one that grew up in the Atlanta area.

We won’t use the word cheap, but Atlanta has been very careful with its money over the last several seasons. One could describe their spending strategy as wise, as the Braves have truly committed to developing strong talent and extending that talent on affordable deals before other teams have a chance to swoop in and drive up the price. They’re building a contender at a far lower cost than other teams.

Correa would not fit that strategy exactly, but not committing outlandish money for a long period of time could be what the Braves need to kick it into overdrive and try to secure another World Series victory.

Like the Yankees, the Braves as it stands now will turn shortstop responsibilities to a young player, Vaughn Grissom. Giving him more time to develop won’t hurt.

Even if Correa is pricier than they would hope in terms of AAV, if it’s a one- or two-year deal rather than a decade-long commitment, it’s a lot more feasible for the smart-spending Braves.
