Steve Cohen sends a clear message on Twitter: The Mets don’t need Carlos Correa

Steve Cohen’s activity on social media as the Carlos Correa saga drags on is a clear message to fans in New York: The Mets don’t need the shortstop.

Carlos Correa has been the recipient of two massive free agency deals this offseason. It’s just that neither of them have gone through officially. And now there’s a danger the Mets will give up on getting that second deal locked in.

Mets owner Steve Cohen fed into that narrative on Friday with some noteworthy “likes” on Twitter.

“We are already a better team than we were this time last year,” read one tweet liked by Cohen. “Remember… We won 101 games last year. That’s because of the commitment Steve Cohen has made to the team and fans. Whether the Correa deal works out not, it’s great to have an owner willing to do anything to win!”

Another Tweet went like this:

“Met fans? Don’t panic. In the event this isn’t a ploy remember, the Mets have options in either Escobar or a young gun in Baty. I want Carlos, but he needs the Mets more than they need him. Plus his options are shrinking. Stay the course.”

Steve Cohen’s Twitter likes push idea Mets don’t need Carlos Correa

Unless Cohen has a few burner accounts, he didn’t write either of those tweets. Liking them says enough about where his head is at when it comes to Correa.

Concerns over Correa’s physical scuppered his deal with the Giants, which opened the door for the Mets to pounce on a deal of their own. Then they had similar concerns over the physical, specifically the long-term viability of Correa’s surgically repaired right fibula. They have been locked in negotiations with the shortstop over amended language for the contract ever since.

At this point, there still seems to be optimism that Correa and the Mets can get a compromise done but Cohen’s likes on Twitter suggest he’s willing to play hardball.
