Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon isn’t happy with the NFL’s backup plan, which included a coin flip to determine seeding in the AFC.

Cincinnati was unfortunately involved in the Damar Hamlin incident last Monday night, so they could be impacted by the NFL’s backup plan as a result of that. The backup plan, which could impact seeding depending on this week’s results, involves a coin flip.

Somehow, our society has developed technology beyond our collective imagination. Yet, something so simple must decide seeding in the AFC postseason.

The Bengals front office reportedly wasn’t happy with the NFL’s resolution.

Why the Bengals were upset about NFL’s coin flip plan

If Cincinnati defeats Baltimore — who has quarterback troubles of their own — on Sunday, they won’t have to worry about any potential coin-flip resolution. While the AFC Championship Game could be played at a neutral site, if Cincinnati were to lose to Baltimore in Week 18, homefield advantage for the Wild Card round would be decided by a literal coin flip.

“Many in the Cincinnati organization are livid about a decision they feel penalizes the Bengals and rewards the Ravens,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported, citing sources.

Cincinnati took a resounding first-half lead on Baltimore, and to celebrate, Joe Mixon pretended to flip a coin as a reaction to the NFL’s hilarious, yet simple backup plan.

Mixon’s reaction reflects the Bengals feelings on the issue, as well as their fans, who are not happy that a season’s worth of work could come down to a heads/tails argument, and one they’d have little control over.

Of course, that could all be avoided by beating a Ravens team down to their third string QB on Sunday.

In the end, there was no winning resolution for the NFL. Ideally, Cincinnati will win on Sunday, and put this whole thing to bed.
