Ranking NFL quarterbacks based on 2022: 27. Mac Jones, Patriots

The New England Patriots offense looked about as stale and stagnant as an offense could possibly look most of the 2022 season. It almost looked as though Bill Belichick took a defensive-minded coach and made him the team’s offensive play caller.

Oh, wait. Never mind.

As for the quarterback position, Mac Jones finished the year as the Patriots starter. But, there were times when his status as “the guy” was in question. For a little while, rookie Bailey Zappe came in and looked every bit like someone this offense could depend on.

In the end, Jones kept his job and the Patriots offense kept under-producing. The frustration between Jones and Matt Patricia was on display on several occasions this season, and it was warranted. Belichick has some questions to answer this offseason when it comes to that side of the ball, that’s for sure.

The 2022 campaign saw Jones finish worse than he did as a rookie, going 288 of 442 for 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He was statistically worse in most facets than he was a year ago, and even though he missed a couple of games, Jones definitely took a step back.
