3 teams that should call 49ers for Trey Lance trade with Brock Purdy’s emergence
2. The Indianapolis Colts could make Trey Lance their franchise quarterback
The quarterback position has been a revolving door for the Colts since Andrew Luck’s sudden retirement. Indianapolis has tried stop-gaps (Jacoby Brissett), veterans on their last legs (Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan) and reclamation projects (Carson Wentz) but failed to find a true successor to Luck.
The one door that Indianapolis hasn’t opened is to draft a young quarterback, a move that makes more sense now with a potential rebuild beginning with a new coaching staff. The Colts could try trading up to No. 1 to jump the Houston Texans for Bryce Young, but such a pursuit would likely deplete the team of a ton of draft capital needed to infuse the roster with youth.
A more cost-effective option would be to pursue a deal for Lance, who will turn 23 in May, making him just one year older than Young. Hiring the right coaching staff to work with Lance would be critical but parting with one pick for him would free the Colts up to use the assets they would send to Chicago for the top pick for other young players.
There also won’t be as much pressure on Lance to be the guy replacing Luck since several others have come through Indianapolis since his retirement. Entering a rebuilding situation makes sense for Lance, who can develop his game alongside a strong running back in Jonathan Taylor and a top young receiver in Michael Pittman.
