Alabama basketball player charged with murder after shooting near campus

Alabama junior basketball player Darius Miles was charged with capital murder in relation to a shooting near the university’s campus in Tuscaloosa.
Junior Alabama forward Darius Miles has been arrested and charged with capital murder in relation to a shooting at “The Strip” near the university’s Tuscaloosa campus on Sunday that left a 23-year-old woman dead.
According to the police, via ABC 33 40 News, a vehicle drove near University Boulevard and stopped near the Walk of Champions at Bryant-Denny Stadium for help after spotting a university police vehicle. The driver said that their vehicle had been shot into and that they fired shots back in self-defense and hit one of the suspects. Inside the vehicle was the 23-year-old victim, who was pronounced dead.
On Sunday morning, Miles was arrested and placed in handcuffs, where he was taken to jail with no bond. He was one of two suspects arrested in relation to the shooting. The video below of Miles’ arrest comes courtesy of Ryan Phillips of Tuscaloosa Patch.
Alabama basketball’s Darius Miles arrested for capital murder
The Alabama Athletic’s Department released a statement, via Charlie Potter of 247Sports, where they sent their condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Alabama then revealed in their statement that Miles is no longer a member of the basketball team.
One day prior to the shooting, the team officially ruled Miles out for the remainder of the season after he suffered an ankle injury.
Miles played in just six games this season, 53 games in total in his three years with the team.
