What is the biggest comeback in NFL playoff history, and where does the Jaguars comeback over the Chargers rank among the biggest?
Things can change in the blink of an eye in the NFL. Even when things seem nailed into place and far out of reach, great teams stage great comebacks.
The Jacksonville Jaguars closed a 27-point comeback in the Wild Card round of this year’s playoffs to beat the Los Angeles Chargers 31-30. They overcome three first-quarter interceptions thrown by Trevor Lawrence.
It was a great never-give-up story. Where does it rank among the biggest comebacks in NFL history?
What is the biggest comeback in NFL playoff history?
The biggest deficit closed in NFL playoff history is 32 points (H/T Adam Schefter). That was the Bills against the Oilers (now Houston Texans) in 1992. The Bills were down in that game, 35-3, and ended up winning the game in overtime. It’s referred to colloquially as just “The Comeback.”
After that is the Colts, who put together a 28-point comeback against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. KC was up 38-10, but Andrew Luck threw for four touchdowns and led Indianapolis back in it.
Coming in at third is the Jags’ 27-point comeback on Saturday night which was largely thanks to the gutsy play-calling from Doug Pederson.
Maybe the most memorable in recent history, the Patriots’ 25-point comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, doesn’t crack the top three. Another recent one, the Chiefs’ largest comeback in playoff history also falls just short at 24 points, which was against the Houston Texans in January, 2020 en route to a Super Bowl victory.
