The Connecticut Sun have reportedly traded the 2021 WNBA MVP, Jonquel Jones, to the New York Liberty.

ESPN’s Alexa Philippou broke the news of Jonquel Jones being traded to the New York Liberty on Sunday. According to ESPN, the trade is expected to be finalized by the end of the night.

Jones is a four-time all-star and was crowned MVP in the 2021 WNBA season. She finished last season averaging 14.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists while shooting 36.9 percent from 3.

Later reporting revealed that it was a three-team deal with Jones and Kayla Thornton going to the Liberty, Crystal Dangerfield and Natasha Howard going to the Dallas Wings and Tyasha Harris, Rebecca Allen and the No. 6 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft (from the Liberty) going back to Connecticut.

Jonquel Jones forecast in New York

Jones was the Connecticut Sun’s best player last season. She’s a dynamic two-way force in the frontcourt and she was a key anchor for a team that finished the 2022 season in second place overall with a 25-11 record. The Bahamanian native led the Sun to the finals for the second time within the last 10 years. But changes were clearly coming after head coach Curt Miller announced that he would be leaving the Sun to take the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Sparks.

Jones will join the Liberty who have a promising star guard in Sabrina Ionescu who is a threat offensively from all three levels of the floor.  New York will be receiving a player that can dominate on both ends of the floor and she will be able to help the Liberty reach a level of maturity and focus.

Free agency for the league will start on Jan. 21 but players can begin to officially sign contracts on Feb. 1, so there could be more moves on the horizon for the LIberty.
