There will be a few teams that get into a bidding war with Commanders free agent defensive lineman Daron Payne. This guy is about to get an absolutely massive deal, and for a team like the Seahawks which massively overachieved this season, Payne’s arrival looks like a slam dunk.

The Seahawks defense needs help at almost every position except maybe starting cornerback, and their defensive line is no exception. In 2022, the Seahawks allowed the third-most rushing yards in the league. To say they need to beef up that defensive front is an understatement.

Payne isn’t just an animal against the run. He also finished with a career-best 11.5 sacks in 2022, which is another reason he will make out a rich man in the spring. Payne is arguably the best defensive lineman available in free agency, and the Seahawks are able to land him.

Adding Payne also gives Seattle a huge sigh of relief heading into the draft, where they hold the fifth overall pick. They may not have to feel like they need a Jalen Carter, then, for example. Instead, maybe they go after a franchise quarterback.
