Tom Brady replacements to keep Super Bowl hopes alive for Buccaneers: Jimmy Garoppolo

Full disclosure: Jimmy Garoppolo was also on our list of realistic options for the Bucs to consider replacing Tom Brady with. So in that regard, maybe he’s the perfect Tampa Bay fit? Not only does he fit in the realm of what we could see happening right now, but he also gives them some Super Bowl cache.

Jimmy Garoppolo is an interesting case. Is he a good quarterback or just an OK quarterback who has benefited from a strong system? Brock Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant, having success in the same system with minimal upstart time or initiation runway makes you wonder how well Kyle Shanahan is setting his guys up for success and whether or not their talent level is a significant driver to that success.

Regardless, Garoppolo has led a team to a Super Bowl. He has been there as a backup before that. He knows what it means to compete deep in the season. And as good as Purdy is playing, if the Niners make it to the Super Bowl they will certainly consider starting Jimmy G.

The problem with a guy like Jimmy G, or Daniel Jones for that matter, is you almost certainly aren’t expecting to get to the Super Bowl just by plugging them into your roster. Heck, if Tom Brady couldn’t even carry this Bucs team on his own past the Wild Card round, how naive would it be to think either of these guys can?

But it would certainly be a step in the right direction. Super Bowl is not a default here, but there’s a world in which we can see it happening for TB with Jimmy G, especially if the NFC is as weak next year as it was this year.
