Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid have heated exchange on sidelines after injury
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes pleaded with head coach Andy Reid to go back in the game after suffering an ankle injury against the Jaguars.
Patrick Mahomes did not want to be sidelined because of an ankle injury and he let Andy Reid know it.
It wasn’t hard to read the lips of the Chiefs quarterback talking to his head coach after his ankle got rolled up on a play against the Jaguars.
Here’s the video from the sidelines:
Reid didn’t acquiesce to his quarterback’s pleas. Backup quarterback Chad Henne went into the game for Mahomes, who was sent back for more treatment in the locker room.
He didn’t look pleased.
Patrick Mahomes begged Andy Reid to go back in but the coach was proven right
A Jaguars’ pass rusher fell on Mahomes’ ankle late in the first quarter and the impact was immediately noticeable. While the quarterback stayed in the game for the rest of the drive, he looked hampered and Kansas City ultimately settled for a field goal to go up 10-7.
Jacksonville had to punt on their next drive, pinning the Chiefs at their own two-yard line. That’s when the discussion on the sideline took place and the decision to put in Henne was apparently made.
Henne led a 98-yard touchdown drive, justifying Reid’s decision to go with the healthy backup instead of the injured starter. That’s not always the easiest choice, especially when a quarterback of Mahomes’ caliber is begging to go back in but Reid is an experienced enough head coach to trust his back up. The Chiefs led 17-7 with under four minutes remaining in the first half.
Mahomes was able to return to the sideline during that with an official injury designation of “questionable.”
