5 dream Mike McCarthy replacements Cowboys wish they had coaching
Jerry Jones might say that Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is safe, but fans want him gone and are likely dreaming of one of these replacements.
Even after seeing the end of the fourth quarter be horribly mismanaged against the 49ers in the Divisional Round for the second straight year, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones maintained his position that head coach Mike McCarthy’s job was safe. So, buckle up for at least another season, I guess.
McCarthy’s Super Bowl (singular) bonafides from his time in Green Bay have Jones wearing rose-colored glasses when looking at the head coach despite the painfully obvious truth. He is consistently mismanaging a team with a good roster, but not one good enough to withstand misguidance, particularly in the playoffs. He won a Super Bowl with prime Aaron Rodgers, but only the one, and even the most ardent Dak Prescott defenders know the Cowboys quarterback isn’t Rodgers.
But fans can always dare to dream. If we’re dreaming, replacing Mike McCarthy is one of the first changes that would need to be made. In doing so, these head coaches have the goods to take the Cowboys to new heights — or at least past the Divisional Round for the first time in 28 years.
Cowboys: 5 Mike McCarthy replacements fans dream of Dallas hiring
You saw what Mike Kafka did with Danny Dimes, now imagine him with the Cowboys talent
Despite being a fourth-round pick in 2010 out of Northwestern, Mike Kafka the quarterback didn’t amount to much in the NFL. He bounced around the league for six seasons but only threw 16 career passes, which resulted in 107 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Mike Kafka the coach, however, has started to rightfully earn some acclaim.
Kafka was a graduate assistant at Northwester for one year before being hired as an offensive quality control coach for the Chiefs on Andy Reid’s staff. He then worked his way up the ranks to being the QBs coach and passing game coordinator from 2020-21, which led to Brian Daboll hiring him as his offensive coordinator for the Giants.
While Daboll has received and deserved a great deal of credit for the season New York had, Kafka needs his flowers too and he’s been getting them as a potential head coaching candidate for many of the current NFL vacancies. He’s seen and helped guide success at every turn.
To be sure, Kafka is unproven as an NFL head coach, which is always a slippery slope to navigate down for teams. But the upside that feels beyond the horizon with Mike McCarthy on the sidelines in Dallas would undoubtedly be moved closer if they were to be able to poach the OC from their biggest rivals.
