Cowboys should be the ones to give Eric Bieniemy his past-due shot

Time and again, we’ve heard Eric Bieniemy mentioned as a head coaching candidate, but he hasn’t gotten the opportunity yet. Why that’s the case could be up for debate, whether it’s an inability to interview, a distrust that he’s anything more than Andy Reid’s offensive coordinator with little effect on the offense, or the more problematic answer that it’s because of his race.

But the Cowboys shouldn’t buy any of that. The fact of the matter is that the Chiefs offense has continually been special no matter what’s happened to them. Yes, the team has an all-world quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, but the fact that this team can whiff on a first-round running back in Clyde Edwards-Helaire, trade Tyreek Hill, revamp the entire offensive line and still be the best or close to it in the league is at least somewhat due to Bieniemy.

Much like with Kafka, we don’t know what Bieniemy as a head coach in the NFL looks like. What we do know is that the unit under his guidance has been extremely reliable in its greatness. That’s something that hasn’t been the case for the Dallas Cowboys for some time. Jason Garrett surely didn’t have it, but McCarthy hasn’t shown it either.

Perhaps that’s the DNA that Bieniemy could inject into this team. Dak Prescott isn’t Patrick Mahomes; that’s not a newsflash. However, the talent on both sides of the ball with this team is far too good, even with holes on the roster, for the team to settle for mediocre results.
