1 reason each remaining NFL playoff team will and won’t win a Super Bowl
By John Buhler
Why the San Francisco 49ers will win their first Super Bowl since 1994 season
Even though the Bengals and Chiefs are riding impressive winning streaks as well, no team has been hotter across the NFL than the San Francisco 49ers. They ended the regular season on a 10-gamer and have added two more victories to make it a dozen in a row for them. Even crazier, Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy has never lost an NFL start for the 49ers, as he is now at a combined 7-0.
Momentum is a very real thing, which is why the Eagles better be careful about the NFC West buzz saw coming into their place. Like the Bengals and the Chiefs, the 49ers got to this point of the postseason last year, so this is not untrodden territory for them in the slightest. Lincoln Financial Field will be a hostile environment, but the red-hot 49ers are absolutely rolling right now.
This marks the third time Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers team will be playing for a trip to the Super Bowl.
Why the San Francisco 49ers will see Super Bowl title drought extend into 2023
This is the elephant in the room. While Purdy has been a fantastic story, when will the clock strike midnight on this cinderella story? Jalen Hurts may be a bit of an underdog himself, but Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes are every bit blue-chippers. Purdy was able to hang with Hurts during their Big 12 days, but this the NFL. Eventually, water will find its level and the 49ers will be going home.
However, Purdy may have that special sauce that made other underdrafted quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Kurt Warner so special. He has already done a remarkable job being thrust into action during his rookie season out of Iowa State. But with that in mind, it is hard to see him carrying the 49ers past Hurts and then past either Burrow or Mahomes if San Francisco even wins the NFC.
Growing pains are part of the NFL game, and Purdy is unfortunately due for his in short order.
