Sean Payton calls BS on Broncos coaching rumor
Sean Payton said there was “zero truth” to report from the Washington Post that a power struggle with Broncos ownership could keep him from taking job.
The prospect of Sean Payton becoming the next head coach of the Denver Broncos isn’t particularly high at the moment.
However, Payton’s latest tweet could give Broncos fans a glimmer of hope.
The head coach candidate responded to a tweet by Mark Maske of the Washington Post claiming there was “an issue” that cropped up during Payton’s interview with Broncos ownership.
“Payton likes the idea of coaching Russell Wilson and having that defense but fears a potential power struggle with a member of the ownership group,” Maske reported. He didn’t name the person in question but he did add that Payton’s interactions with Condoleeza Rice, one member of the ownership group, were positive.
Payton called BS on the entire report.
“Zero truth to this,” he tweeted. “We had a great visit and @Broncos Ownership was fantastic!!”
Sean Payton denied any issue with the Broncos ownership
Payton spent Thursday interviewing with the Cardinals. He apparently sent that tweet shortly after he left Arizona’s facilities.
Whether or not there are any concerns about Payton and the balance of power within the Broncos organization, it’s not clear whether he or the team are actually interested in moving forward together.
On Wednesday, Ian Rapoport reported that the Broncos were one of several teams that had not extended an invitation for a second interview, claiming the team was “focusing elsewhere.”
The NFL reporter made sure to say that Payton wasn’t “out” for the Broncos, but their eyes are apparently on other options for now.
Hiring Payton would come at a high cost with the Saints asking for significant assets in a trade to free up their former head coach.
