National Signing Day 2023: Predicting where Top 10 unsigned recruits land
By John Buhler
6. Walker Lyons: Tight End, Folsom (Folsom, CA)
Walker Lyons is the No. 5 tight end in the country, the No. 10 player from California and the No. 123 player nationally. Lyons remains uncommitted this late into the process. He has 33 official commitments, including offers from BYU, Georgia, Stanford, USC and Utah. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound tight end from Folsom has visited all five universities, including Georgia the most recently.
While he has been tied to Stanford somewhat throughout the process, keep in mind that David Shaw is no longer in Palo Alto. Troy Taylor may have a strong reputation in-state, but he is unproven at the FBS level. You could see him going to either Utah school, as well as potentially making the trek across the country to play for Georgia. However, that USC offer seems like a fit.
USC is going to sign a star tight end this National Signing Day, and it could very well be Lyons.
Prediction: USC
5. Rodrick Pleasant: Cornerback, Junipero Serra (Gardena, CA)
Rodrick Pleasant is the No. 7 player from California, the No. 9 cornerback in the country and the No. 91 overall prospect in his class. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound defensive back has been uncommitted throughout his recruiting process. While he has 30 official offers, Pleasant is looking at Boston College, Cal, Oregon, UCLA and USC. Pleasant visited all but USC during his senior year.
He visited UCLA most recently, but Chip Kelly is not known for his recruiting prowess. Frankly, this may come down to either Oregon or USC, unless he has really strong attachments to either Boston College of Cal. While staying in-state makes a ton of sense, Dan Lanning is an elite recruiter who specializes in coaching up defense. It would be hard to pass on Oregon right now.
Lanning will use his recruiting chops to steal one way from the Pac-12 powers in Los Angeles.
Prediction: Oregon
4. Jaden Rashada: Quarterback, Pittsburg (Pittsburg, CA)
Jaden Rashada is the No. 6 player from California, the No. 7 quarterback in the country and the No. 44 player nationally. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound signal-caller from Pittsburg has 32 official offers. To say his recruitment has been utterly fascinating would be an understatement. He initially committed to Miami before flipping to Florida, where he somehow got out of his NLI a week ago.
While he also visited LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M ahead of his senior year, the two teams to keep an eye on here are Arizona State and Cal, with Washington in the mix, too. He might hail from the Bay Area, but his father played for the Sun Devils back in the early 1990s. With fellow Arizona State alum Kenny Dillingham calling the shots, do not be shocked if Rashada decides to fork ’em.
Landing Rashada this late into the process would be big news for the Sun Devils football program.
Prediction: Arizona State
