When are NBA All-Star Game rosters announced?
By Ian Levy
The NBA announced the All-Star starters for each conference last week. When will get a chance to find out who will fill out the rest of the NBA All-Star rosters?
On Thursday, the NBA announced the All-Star starters in each conference — Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell and Kyrie Irving in the East, LeBron James, Nikola Jokic, Zion Williamson, Steph Curry, and Luka Doncic in the West.
Those starters were selected with a blend of voting — 50 percent from the results of the fan vote, 25 percent from the results of the player vote and 25 percent from the results of media voting. The top two leading vote-getters in each conference (Giannis and LeBron) will serve as captains for the draft that will set the actual rosters for the game.
But there are still 14 more All-Star selections coming, seven for each conference, chosen by the league’s coaches.
When will the rest of the NBA All-Star Game rosters be announced?
The NBA All-Star reserves will be announced Thursday, Feb. 2. Among those likely to be considered are Joel Embiid (who was the most obvious snub from the starters), Damian Lillard, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Tyrese Haliburton, Aaron Gordon, James Harden, Anthony Davis, Domantas Sabonis, Jaylen Brown and more.
In addition, we could see injury replacements for stars who are selected but are unable to play, like Kevin Durant or Zion Williamson.
But the actual rosters for the game won’t be decided until 30 minutes before tip-off. Since 2019, the NBA All-Star Draft has been held well in advance of the game. This year, it is being held immediately prior to tip-off creating the potential for all sorts of delightful chaos around teammates and opponents.
