Bears are guaranteed to make major moves in free agency this offseason

With the most cap space in the league and a requirement to spend heavily to meet a threshold, the Chicago Bears will look to make aggressive moves this offseason.

While Kansas City and Philadelphia get set for Super Bowl LVII, the Chicago Bears are gearing up for their biggest offseason in recent memory.

Armed with a boatload of cap space and a large quantity of draft capital, including the No.1 overall pick, it is highly possible to see Chicago take a giant leap next season and speed up their rebuilding plan. Also, it has to work.

The Bears need to spend not just to compete in their division with Minnesota, Green Bay, and even Detroit now coming into the picture, but to meet a certain threshold.

This means several things. For one, instead of hibernating, the Bears will have to open their pocketbooks and declare it is truly bear season. That means retaining players from the previous year who proved they deserve to stick for the long haul. That also includes going out and signing the right amount of free agents to fit the team’s plans.

Chicago Bears have a busy offseason ahead

With so many holes on the roster and so much money and draft capital to play with, there is a good chance the Bears could be fielding a competitive team next season. That said, it will take more than one offseason to keep their hands in the honeypot, especially with how the free agent market is shaping out. 

Ryan Poles has stated he wants a consistent winner, not a flash in the pan, and only a handful of this year’s free agents can help that vision come true. Chicago’s biggest needs are in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The rule in today’s game is having an elite offense and a solid pass rush/defensive line. A tremendous secondary comes after that. First, get your offense to elite-level status, and then make your defense raise the bar.

Thankfully, this year’s crop of big-name free agents happens to be trench players—the same with the draft. If Chicago plays their cards right, they can land stars in both the offseason and the draft.

But for now, time will tell. We don’t know what moves they will make and where they will make them. At least it’s good to know they have a chance to fire back at those who use them as a punchline for jokes because of last season.
