Why Packers are even more likely to trade Aaron Rodgers after Tom Brady retirement

The Tom Brady retirement only further pushes the Green Bay Packers further toward trading Aaron Rodgers this offseason.

Tom Brady has retired. Again. This time, it seems a little more official. After all, you can’t walk back a retirement twice right? But what does that have to do with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers?

Well, for one, it leaves Rodgers as one of the last-standing quarterbacks of that era. He and Russell Wilson are arguably the two premier quarterbacks from the late 2000s-to-2010s window that are still chugging along.

Rodgers, himself, could certainly decide to retire, too, which would set up quite the Hall of Fame class between him, J.J. Watt, and Brady in a matter of years.

But if Rodgers decides to stay, there’s a good chance the Packers decide to move toward a new era, trading the veteran quarterback elsewhere to get away from the sizable financial commitment he and his posse come with. They need to do something to orient themselves for competitive football down the line.

If Rodgers is indeed available, he’s already one of the premier talents available that any team in need of a QB should be calling. Reports indicate the Packers are ready to move on and Rodgers has hinted at it himself, too. 

Brady was going to be a free agent, so he was available to all of those teams as well, but not anymore. Now that he’s retired, that takes a huge player off the board.

That puts Rodgers up against the likes of Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo when it comes to available quarterbacks this offseason, if the Packers do decide to go to market with him. When you’re selling Rodgers in a market where Carr is the next best thing, you can drive the price up and up and up.

There’s a massive need for quality quarterbacks right now. The entire NFC South could use an upgrade. The Tennessee Titans need one. The San Francisco 49ers could possibly use one.

The Packers are about to sell extremely high. If they want to, that is.
