The 57th Super Bowl is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023. Here’s which NFL team has won the most Lombardi Trophies in history.
Every season, each of the 32 NFL teams look to be the last ones standing at the Super Bowl hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Some teams have never accomplished this feat. Others have only experienced the joy of winning the biggest football game of the year once. But then, there are teams that have made winning the Lombardi Trophy a frequent occurrence.
At Super Bowl 57 on Sunday, Feb. 12, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles face off. Both teams were the No. 1 seeds in their respective conferences. The Chiefs clinched their spot by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in the AFC Championship Game. Meanwhile, the Eagles earned their berth into the big game with a 31-7 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
With the big game arriving, fans or those just beginning to watch the NFL may have some questions about the history of the Super Bowl.
When it come to which team have the most wins in the big game, we have that answer for you.
Which team has the most wins in the Super Bowl?
The most wins in the Super Bowl are six, and two teams hold that honor. These organizations are the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers.
New England has the most appearances out of any NFL team with 11. They didn’t experience much success in their first two trips in 1985 and 1996, where they lost to the Chicago Bears (46-10 loss) and Green Bay Packers (35-21 loss), respectively. But with the duo of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, they won six of their next nine appearances.
Let’s take a look at the results of each of their Lombardi Trophy wins:
- Super Bowl 36 (2001 season): New England def. St. Louis Rams 20-17
- Super Bowl 38 (2003 season): New England def. Carolina Panthers 32-29
- Super Bowl 39 (2004 season): New England def. Philadelphia Eagles 24-21
- Super Bowl 49 (2014 season): New England def. Seattle Seahawks 28-24
- Super Bowl 51 (2016 season): New England def. Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime
- Super Bowl 53 (2018 season): New England def. Los Angeles Rams 13-3
The other three Patriots losses arrived at the end of the 2007 and 2011 seasons against the New York Giants (17-14 loss in 2007, 21-17 loss in 2011), and in 2017 against the Eagles (41-33 loss).
Pittsburgh, on the other hand, have won the Lombardi Trophy in eight trips to the big game. Their only losses arrived in 1995 and 2010 to the Dallas Cowboys (27-17 loss) and Green Bay Packers (31-25 loss), respectively.
Let’s take a look at the Steelers’ victories in the final game of the NFL season:
- Super Bowl 9 (1974 season): Pittsburgh def. Minnesota Vikings 16-6
- Super Bowl 10 (1975 season): Pittsburgh def. Dallas Cowboys 21-17
- Super Bowl 13 (1978 season): Pittsburgh def. Dallas Cowboys 35-31
- Super Bowl 14 (1979 season): Pittsburgh def. Los Angeles Rams 31-19
- Super Bowl 40 (2005 season): Pittsburgh def. Seattle Seahawks 21-10
- Super Bowl 43 (2008 season): Pittsburgh def. Arizona Cardinals 27-23
The teams that are close to catching up to the Patriots and Steelers in terms of Lombardi Trophy wins are the 49ers and Cowboys, both of whom have five victories each.
