Everything to know about the Lombardi Trophy.

The Lombardi Trophy is the pinnacle award in the NFL. It’s awarded to the team who wins the Super Bowl each year. The trophy, named after famed football coach Vince Lombardi, can be seen hoisted above the heads in numerous post-game iconic photos and even seen tossed from a boat by Tom Brady. Don’t worry someone caught it.

But there’s a lot about the Lombardi Trophy that fans might not know about … and that’s what you’re here for.

First, the name. We already mentioned it’s named after Vince Lombardi, but that’s due to him being the coach that led the Green Bay Packers to win the first two Super Bowls ever. ICONIC.

The award wasn’t always called the Lombardi Trophy though, it wasn’t called that until September 1970, when the famed coach died. It was presented for the first time as the Vince Lombardi Trophy to the Baltimore Colts after their victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V.

Who designed the Lombardi Trophy?

The design is another talking point. According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle met with Tiffany & Co. vice president Oscar Riedner in 1996 and made a sketch on a cocktail napkin. That sketch would turn into the trophy.

Prior to their meeting, “Reidener went to FAO Schwartz and bought a football that he put on his kitchen table. The next morning he grabbed a box of Cornflakes, poured them into a bowl, and stared at the football while eating.”

Lombardi Trophy stats:

Height: 20.75 inches
Weight: 107.3 ounces
Value: In excess of $10,000

The design is of a football in a kicking position on a pyramid stand with three concave sides.

There is a new trophy made every year (unlike the Stanley Cup) and its winners retain it for life.

Who do you think takes him the trophy in 2023? The Philadelphia Eagles or the Kansas City Chiefs?
