List of Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl
By John Buhler
Here is a list of every Kansas City Chiefs quarterback that has ever won a Super Bowl before.
Sunday marks the fifth time the Kansas City Chiefs will be playing for a Super Bowl championship.
The Chiefs have won the AFC for the third time in four years. In fact, Kansas City has played in the AFC Championship Game each of Patrick Mahomes’ five years as their starting quarterback. Prior to his ascension to superstardom, Kansas City had spent the better part of four decades suffering through playoff futility. It is the golden age of Chiefs football, but they were good back in the day…
Entering Super Bowl 57 vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs are 2-2 all time in this title bout.
List of all the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks
To date, these are the two only Chiefs quarterbacks who have ever won the Super Bowl:
- Len Dawson: Super Bowl 4
- Patrick Mahomes: Super Bowl 54
The late, great Len Dawson was the Chiefs’ star quarterback in the 1960s. Kansas City lost the first Super Bowl to the Green Bay Packers. Bart Starr and Vince Lombardi were glorious on that Sunday. Dawson enjoyed a Fresca and a lung dart at halftime. Three years later, Hank Stram’s Chiefs matriculated the ball down the field, boys, to beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl 4.
The Chiefs’ first Super Bowl championship, along with the one from the previous year where Joe Namath made a guarantee that the New York Jets would win, helped set into motion the AFL/NFL merger. While the AFL was no more, it largely became the AFC, helping the NFL grow into an even bigger brand in the years to follow. Unfortunately, it took a long 50 years for the Chiefs to get back.
In Mahomes’ second year as the starter, the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers with a fantastic fourth quarter in Miami with something called Wasp. Mahomes won Super Bowl 54 MVP and the coronation was set. While he did his celebrating a few days later, Mahomes showed off his leisure studies degree from Texas Tech University by crushing one Silver Bullet at a time on a bus.
No new Chiefs Super Bowl-winning quarterback will be added to this list, only Mahomes’ second.
