Gavin Lux could make or break the Dodgers World Series chances

Trea Turner is gone. The All-Star shortstop joined the defending National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies in free agency this past winter. That is going to leave a gaping hole up the middle of the Los Angeles Dodgers infield.

The Dodgers are going to need former top prospect Gavin Lux to show what he’s made of in 2023. The former first-round pick, after two-plus years of rather underwhelming results, finally seemed to things going in the right direction in 2022.

Lux had bounced around to several different positions during the first few years of his major league career. The Wisconsin native, who came up through the farm system as a shortstop, saw time at second base and the outfield.

With both Turner and former shortstop Corey Seager now gone, the shortstop position could be Lux’s to claim. The Dodgers have a nice insurance policy in Miguel Rojas in the event that Lux is better suited to remain at the keystone.

Last season, Gavin Lux posted respectable numbers, but he’ll need to tap into some power in 2023. After pounding 23 homers in 2019 while playing in the minors, Lux has failed to eclipse 20 home runs in his first three-plus major league seasons. Lux’s performance in 2023 could make or break the Los Angeles Dodgers World Series chances.
