Quarterback has been an issue for the New Orleans Saints since Drew Brees retired, but Derek Carr is about to walk right through their door.

Two things that we know for certain are that the New Orleans Saints need a quarterback and that the Las Vegas Raiders are going to trade Derek Carr this offseason. Whether the stars align for the two franchises to put the obvious puzzle piece in place remains to be seen. It’s sure looking like it, though.

Previously, the Saints had requested to meet with Carr after Las Vegas benched him for the final games of the regular season and prepared to trade him this offseason. On Tuesday, the Raiders granted New Orleans permission to meet with Carr and the veteran quarterback will come on a visit, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport also noted that Carr has a no-trade clause in his contract, so his meeting with teams is vital to getting a deal done. The insider also mentioned that current Saints head coach Dennis Allen was the head coach of the Raiders in 2014 when a then-rookie Derek Carr was inserted into the starting lineup.

Saints rumors: Derek Carr visiting New Orleans over potential trade

The Raiders undoubtedly need a reset at quarterback and, perhaps, with many parts of their roster. With that said, Carr has been far from bad in Las Vegas (and Oakland) and has proven capable of winning games, especially when surrounded by talent. He’s very much in line with a quarterback who can be successful in a good situation, though he may not single-handedly make a situation good.

That, however, is why the Saints are an intriguing landing spot. After seeing the likes of Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton and Taysom Hill at quarterback, New Orleans has made it clear in a post-Drew Brees world that they direly need an answer at the position. The rest of the roster is set up to win. They have a high-priced and talented defense, a load of skill position talent like Alvin Kamara, Chris Olave and (maybe) Michael Thomas, and a good offensive line.

Quarterback has been the problem. But with Carr, they would be getting a perfect fit with someone who could come in and take advantage of the situation in New Orleans and elevate the team as a whole by simply being capable of playing as an NFL quarterback in 2023.

Derek Carr getting traded to the Saints has long been an option, but now he’s walking through the door in New Orleans soon. With the NFC South as wide-open as ever, this would be a perfect move for the club to get things back on the right track.
