Inside the Clubhouse: 3 contract extension candidates
Logan Webb, San Francisco Giants
The Giants have tried to sign players to long-term contracts — Carlos Correa, Bryce Harper and Aaron Judge — only to come up short or, in Correa’s case, fail his physical after agreeing to a $350 million contract. Under Farhan Zaidi, the Giants have not signed a player to a contract longer than three seasons.
A prime candidate to change that is right-hander Logan Webb, who has had some talks with the Giants about a long-term extension. He’s earning $4.6 million this season and has two more arbitration years remaining before becoming a free agent in 2025.
Webb, 26, has emerged as a star, posting a 2.96 ERA, 23.2 percent strikeout rate and a whopping 58.4 percent ground ball rate. He’s among the best young pitchers in baseball and could command a contract in the vicinity of Spencer Strider and Sandy Alcantara’s deal, but as MLB Trade Rumors noted, Alcantara’s covered three arbitration seasons while Webb’s would only cover two.
