Cubs rumors: Sign Jurickson Profar

The 29-year-old Profar remains one of the top free agents still unsigned as spring training draws near. The Cubs could certainly use some stronger options off the bench and when their starters need a day off, and Profar could provide that in the infield or outfield. While he focused last season on left field, he has seen time at first, second, and third base, as well as shortstop in the past.

A switch-hitter, Profar has 20 games of postseason experience under his belt as well, something that could become valuable if the Cubs were to propel themselves into a chase for a playoff spot.

Profar slashed .243/.331/.391 last season with the San Diego Padres, knocking 36 doubles and 15 home runs while driving in 58 and registering an OPS+ of 111. Compare that type of production to some of the players the Cubs are projected to have coming off the bench this season and it’s easy to see why Profar could be a signing that would be a difference-maker.

Yes, Profar will come with a higher price tag, but the Cubs have already opened their collective wallet this offseason to improve the club. One more signing (such as Profar) could provide a great ROI on the offseason.
