The Philadelphia Phillies have had some misses in free agency and trades since Dave Dombrowski came to town.

Dave Dombrowski hasn’t been with the Philadelphia Phillies for long and yet he has already made an impact. In his second season with the organization, he helped in the charge to the 2022 World Series.

Things are looking brighter than ever for the Phillies during the Bryce Harper Era in Philadelphia. Dombrowski has made some big moves that turned out great. He has also had a couple of duds.

An honorable mention does go out to the Jeurys Familia signing. The team cut him loose around last year’s trade deadline. It didn’t have the chance to negatively affect the team quite enough as these other three dud deals.

3. Worst Phillies moves by Dave Dombrowski: Re-signing Odubel Herrera

The signs were all there. Odubel Herrera wasn’t the same player he was in the first few seasons of his career. His 2019 domestic violence suspension should’ve been enough for the Phillies to put him on notice and move on as soon as they could. He’d remain under team control through the 2021 season, only to later re-sign after the MLB lockout ended.

Was there no better option?

The contract wasn’t a lot, paying him $1.75 million for the 2022 season. However, they did already buy out the last year of his previous deal with the team for $2.5 million. Left with few choices in the free agent and trade market early last spring, Dombrowski went with a familiar name over gut instinct.

The performance on the field was abysmal. In 197 trips to the plate, the once promising Rule 5 Draft pick by the Phillies slashed .238/.279/.378. Upon adding Brandon Marsh at the trade deadline, Herrera’s affiliation with the organization finally came to an end.
