Like several other 49ers players, safety Jimmie Ward is still yapping after his team lost in the conference championship round. 

Bitter doesn’t even begin to describe how the San Francisco 49ers felt after their NFC Championship loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

There was talk of the “script.” There were some good ol’ fashioned sore loser comments. And now, there’s already trash talk months ahead of the 2023 season as 49ers safety Jimmie Ward unloaded some thoughts on a social media live stream.

Ward name-dropped Eagles top receivers DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown and warned them that “somebody gotta pay” for that playoff game result.

Ward said he didn’t want to get too into it with it being the start of the offseason and all, but his brash confidence and hunger for revenge was off the charts.

Safety Jimmie Ward is the latest 49ers player to rip into Eagles squad

The 31-year-old defensive back has spent all nine NFL seasons in San Francisco and is set to enter free agency this offseason.

In 2022, Ward suffered various hamstring and hand injuries that saw him miss a short stretch of the season, and he also butted heads with the coaching staff who moved him from his long-time free safety position to nickel cornerback.

Despite excelling in the corner role, Ward intimated in the video above that he wanted to move back to the safety position, which is valued more highly from a financial perspective.

Ward would do well to ponder his own future in San Francisco rather than think of ways to punish an NFC rival, as the 49ers may not be willing to pay him as a premium safety.

Besides, Brown and Smith combined for just six catches for 66 yards in the NFC Championship, and it’s not like the two of them were particularly rubbing the win in their opponents’ faces. Philly won. End of story.

Ward still sounds salty about that loss, as do many other members of the 49ers organization, but what’s past is past. Constantly chirping at the team that beat you just isn’t a good look, and given Wards’ currently tenuous situation in San Francisco, he’s in no position to start talking smack.

The 49ers and the Eagles are scheduled to play a regular season game in 2023 — let’s just see where things stand then.
