Chiefs: This could be Chad Henne’s last Super Bowl

Chad Henne’s had an astonishing career since he left the University of Michigan. Henne was deemed the quarterback of the future with the Miami Dolphins, until he wasn’t, and took on the role as a career journeyman backup quarterback.

He finally caught on with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he has remained as a stable force whenever Patrick Mahomes goes down with an injury. This occurred in the Divisional Round against the Jacksonville Jaguars, when Henne led a long touchdown drive after Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain.

“I don’t know if it’s like riding a bike, but you’re always prepared,” said the 37-year-old backup. “I think with this offense, obviously with all our weapons that we have, and staying prepared each and every moment, I think you just stay ready. And when your number’s called, you just go in there and do what you did in practice and the meeting rooms and you just take it to the game.”

As much as Henne can be relied upon, his contract is up after this season, and he’ll be another year closer to 40. The Chiefs believe they can trust Shane Buechele, who spent much of the season on the practice squad behind Henne. Buechele is younger, and knows Kansas City’s offense inside and out. He’s performed well in the preseason.

Henne could still have that fire, and who knows, perhaps he returns for another Super Bowl run. But common sense suggests otherwise.
