Free agents the Chicago Bears should happily let leave: David Montgomery, RB
Alright, before Bears fans try and crucify me, let me explain why running back David Montgomery is on this list.
First and foremost, he is a very good running back. The Bears have a great thing going between the 3-headed monster of him, Fields and Khalil Herbert. So, why disrupt a good thing? Better yet, why disrupt may be the only good thing the Bears have on offense.
Here’s why the Bears should let Montgomery walk, and it’s pretty simple.
Running backs don’t get paid. End of story.
Specifically, Montgomery shouldn’t get paid more than $7 million annually. According to Spotrac, that’s right where his market value is. Considering a guy like Isiah Pacheco rose from being a seventh-round rookie just last season, it’s tough to justify spending big money on a running back.
That additional money could easily be spent on an offensive or defensive lineman if the Bears want to ensure they are a winning bidder in either case.
As good as Montgomery has been for Chicago, and as much of a fan favorite he has become, he is replaceable. In fact, to ease the pain, it’s pretty safe to say there are a good dozen and a half running backs in this league, at the very least, that you could argue are fairly replaceable.
