MLB news: Chipper Jones returns to Braves camp, Framber Valdez extension on the horizon, and the teams that missed out on Michael Wacha.

Chipper Jones will be at Atlanta Braves spring training starting on Feb. 27, and will rejoin the team as a special advisor to the coaching staff. Jones was not with the organization last year due to the league’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate.

Dave O’Brien of The Athletic wrote a summary of Chipper’s duties with the team, and what they entail:

"“As a consultant rather than full-time coach, Jones will be in uniform to work with Braves hitters before games during homestands and possibly make one or two road trips, he said. Jones is scheduled to be at spring training beginning Feb. 27.”"

Chipper has not hidden his opinion of the team in recent years, even speaking out after Freddie Freeman left for Los Angeles, voicing his disappointment. Both sides have moved on since.

MLB news: What does Chipper Jones addition mean for Braves?

Having Chipper Jones available for Atlanta’s players is invaluable. He’s another voice in the clubhouse — at least on homestands — for a team that could use some leadership and direction right now, especially after Dansby Swanson left for the Chicago Cubs.

Eventually, these Braves will find their voice, but it’s early in spring training where every club must establish its identity. This version of the Atlanta Braves is as talented as ever, but there are some uncertainties surrounding the future, specifically at shortstop and in the outfield. It’s on analysts and advisors like Chipper to help make this team feel whole.
