Chiefs free agents who could follow Eric Bieniemy: Mecole Hardman

Kansas City could lose not just one, but two weapons for Patrick Mahomes this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster has priced his way out of Kansas City, and Brett Veach knows it. With that money, perhaps the Chiefs could bring back Mecole Hardman if they want. Hardman is a player the Chiefs value as he’s a multifaceted player who can feature on special teams as well if necessary.

Hardman’s value, per Spotrac, is a four-year deal worth just over $40 million. Hardman was injured for much of last season, and durability has been a concern of his in Kansas City. The Chiefs want weapons they know will be available for Mahomes, especially in big games. Hardman was forced to miss the Super Bowl, or all contests.

Hardman’s 2022 campaign provided more questions than answers, as Sports Illustrated laid out:

"“After posting career-highs in targets (83), receptions (59), yards (693) and first downs (33) in 2021, Hardman saw those numbers plummet in 2022-23. He managed to play in just eight games, by far the least of his career, hauling in 25 passes for 297 yards and four receiving touchdowns. He was beginning to come on strong with five total touchdowns in a three-game span, though, before suffering an abdominal injury that held him out of action from Week 9 until the AFC Championship Game.”"

Hardman’s value could plummet the longer he waits to sign a contract, but the wide receiver market in 2023 free agency is noticeably light. He’ll receive that $10 million-per-season deal, it’s just a question of who will pay it.

The Commanders make a lot of sense given the Bieniemy connection. If Kansas City passes, expect Washington to place a call.
