LA Galaxy in talks to sign former Real Madrid defender
Marcelo only terminated his contract at Olympiacos two days ago but the former Real Madrid defender is already being linked with a move to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Brazilian could be a star signing for the Galaxy and would be amongst some great names to represent the club including David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Transfer expert Ekrem Konur revealed the news saying, “The Los Angeles Galaxy is in talks to sign 34-year-old Brazilian free agent Marcelo.”
Marcelo would be another big-name signing for the Galaxy
Since the signing of Beckham, LA Galaxy has added a number of globally recognized players. The club’s current roster includes Javier Hernandez and Douglas Costa as their Designated Players. This leaves one DP space which Marcelo could fill.
Marcelo is a former teammate of Costa with the Brazilian national team. their star players would also balance their side, as they would have Hernandez in attack, Costa in midfield and Marcelo as a defender.
Albeit, Marcelo is a very attacking left-back who in his time at Real Madrid scored 38 goals, and made 103 assists in 546 games. Before his time in the Spanish capital, Marcelo played for Fluminese. He also has 58 caps for Brazil and won the Confederations Cup in 2014.
The Galaxy have not had a star left-sided defender since Ashley Cole. The former England man played 86 times in MLS and is regarded as a very successful signing for the club.
Many players who come to MLS to finish their careers do not turn out to be that successful. The Galaxy will be hoping that if they do sign Marcelo, his time at the club will be better than it was in Greece. At Olympiacos, he spent just five months there, playing just eight games.
The Galaxy need to strengthen their defense
Greg Vanney’s side recently sold Julian Araujo to Barcelona. Araujo’s deal has now been completed after they had initially missed the January deadline by 18 seconds. The Mexican was a very good right-back for the Galaxy and Marcelo would help strengthen their defensive line.
Lionel Messi has recently been linked with a move to Inter Miami. Marcelo and Messi enjoyed some tough battles when they were playing against each other in EL Classico. It would certainly be great to see these two come up against each other once more in MLS.
Marcelo won everything there is to win at Real Madrid. With Los Blancos, he won the Champions League five times, La Liga six times, the Copa del Rey twice, the Super Cup three times and the Club World Cup four times. The Galaxy have not won MLS Cup since 2014. They will be desperate to win it soon, especially with their rivals LAFC winning the title last year.
To sign a proven winner like Marcelo would be a big statement of intent. They lost to LAFC in the Conference semi-finals last season. They meet again in El Traffico at the Rose Bowl this weekend as MLS returns.
