1 trade the Colorado Rockies want to take back: Matt Holliday

The Colorado Rockies selected Matt Holliday in the seventh round of the 1998 MLB Draft. Holliday was a two-sport athlete and drew plenty of praise for his play on the gridiron, but chose instead to play baseball.

Holliday would debut for the Rockies in 2004 after injuries to two of the team’s starting outfielders forced Colorado’s hand. Holliday took the opportunity and ran with it. Holliday placed fifth in the race for NL Rookie of the Year that season.

Holliday would go on to have three consecutive All-Star seasons from 2006-2008 and also took home three Silver Slugger Awards while finishing second in the NL MVP chase in 2007. Phillies infielder Jimmy Rollins barely outpaced Holliday for the prestigious honor.

But, an NL batting title and a second-place finish in the MVP race were not enough to keep Matt Holliday in the Mile High City. The Colorado Rockies made the decision after the 2008 season to trade Holliday to the Oakland A’s.

The A’s then traded Holliday to the St. Louis Cardinals the following summer. Holliday helped lead the Cardinals to five NCLS appearances and a World Series trophy. The Colorado Rockies, and Oakland A’s, would probably like to have that trade back.
