Where should Canadian forward Jonathan David go?
Jonathan David has been on fire for LOSC Lille this season, scoring 15 goals in 23 games. This form has attracted interest from top sides in the Premier League and the Bundesliga.
With Lille, the Canadian has won Ligue 1 in 2021. However, they are currently sixth in the division and the next step in his career would be to move to a team that regularly challenges for titles.
Transfer expert Ekrem Konur has reported that “Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation of Lille’s 23-year-old Canadian striker Jonathan David but he is not the priority option for the German club.”
Should Jonathan David move to the Bundesliga?
Bayern is not the only German club to be linked with David. Fabrizio Romano revealed recently, “Leipzig, among other clubs, are heavily interested in Jonathan David — he’s a top target as being able to play as a target ST & 2nd ST.”
A move to Bayern would be tempting as they are a massive club but with him reportedly not being their first choice it may be best to choose a club where he is. The club will be looking for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who departed for Barcelona last year.
Transferring to RB Leipzig could also be a smart move. The side earned a good draw against Manchester City this week and is currently fifth in the Bundesliga.
David has also been linked with a move to England in the past, with clubs such as Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Would a move to the Premier League be better?
Manchester United are a team who is back to its best. They qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League last night, they are in the EFL Cup final this weekend and are third in the Premier League.
They are in need of a center-forward though, Eric ten Hag’s side let Cristiano Ronaldo go earlier in the season and they currently have Wout Weghorst at the club on a short-term loan from Burnley.
Arsenal is another side that could do with another striker. Gabriel Jesus has missed a lot of this season through injury but Eddie Nketiah has filled the role well until recent games when the Gunners have slipped up.
Mikel Arteta’s side does also have Folarin Balogun on their books but he is on loan at Reims in Ligue 1. Balogun also has 15 league goals this season and is also being monitored by top European sides. He is also eligible to play for the U.S. men’s national team.
Tottenham Hotspur could also be an option for David. However, it may depend on the future of Harry Kane whose contract expires in 2024.
Chelsea is a team who have spent a lot of money recently but they still do not have a proven striker. The Blues could be a perfect fit for David, although they are currently 10th in the Premier League so are in danger of not having European football next season.
David is only 24 so must choose his next destination wisely for his development. Especially with his country co-hosting the World Cup in 2026.
