MLB News: Willson Contreras turns heel on Cubs immediately with Cardinals

For almost two years, it’s felt like Chicago Cubs fans were preparing to say goodbye to longtime catcher and fan favorite Willson Contreras. He was a fixture in trade rumors and, even after he wasn’t dealt at the deadline in 2021 or 2022, his departure in free agency was inevitable.

Of course, Contreras made that departure a bit more painful than it already would’ve been as he elected to become the Yadier Molina replacement for the St. Louis Cardinals. Ahead of his debut with the Redbirds in spring training, though, Contreras might just be turning heel on his former team and going from a former fan-favorite to a sworn enemy.

Contreras was asked to compare the Cubs and Cardinals. In doing so, he not only praised his new team as you’d expect, but he ended up taking a shot at Chicago as he said of his new team, “I like this better. It’s a better organization.”

So not only is the catcher now the backstop for the Cubs’ biggest rival but he’s openly saying they’re just better overall than his former team? Yikes.

Needless to say, if comments like this keep coming, there won’t be a warm welcome back to Wrigley Field for Contreras as he suits up on the opposite side now of the heated NL Central rivalry between these two clubs.
