Teams that could shake up Derek Carr, NFL rumors landscape: Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders have Carson Wentz under contract for a few more seasons but don’t expect him to be a guaranteed starter next year. In fact, it’s likely he’ll be off the Commanders before training camp altogether.

Wentz can easily be unseated as the Commanders can release Wentz with no dead money as ESPN’s Dan Graziano reminded us (subscription required). They are expected to do so since Wentz has been a disappointment in Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and now Washington.

The Commanders just hired two-time Super Bowl champion Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator and assistant coach after he helped lead the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl in four years. There’s so much hope for what this team can do under his and Ron Rivera’s direction.

Effectively, the Commanders now have two leaders that could (and should) be head coaches. That’s scary, especially if you add an even somewhat capable quarterback to the mix as well.

With Wentz, Bieniemy gets the leader he needs to carry out the schematics of the offense. While his game-planning in Kansas City wasn’t focused on the Raiders’ offense, Bieniemy being in the AFC West with Wentz over the last several years could be something, too. The two already are at least peripherally aware of each other’s strengths.

This would add a level of chaos because the NFC East is already packed with talent. The Cowboys were a Super Bowl favorite for large parts of the season last year. The Giants excelled — though legitimate questions exist about their future thanks to the free agency of Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones — and made the playoffs. The Eagles were, obviously, just a game short of being crowned champions, losing to Kansas City in the Super Bowl.

If the Commanders become capable, too, it could create a talent-dense bloodbath in the East.
