NFL mock draft: 3 teams that should bank on Anthony Richardson’s potential
By John Buhler
Carolina Panthers could look to replace Cam Newton with the next Cam Newton
The Carolina Panthers are going to improve their quarterbacking situation this offseason, one way or another. After ripping through retreads throughout Matt Rhule’s unsuccessful reign in Charlotte, the Queen City will be buzzing should the Panthers land a new franchise quarterback for real this time. They are picking No. 9 overall this spring, putting them in prime position to draft Richardson.
Since new head coach Frank Reich does not do short quarterbacks, we can safely cross off Bryce Young to the Panthers. They would have to trade up for him anyways, but that does not seem like it is happening. Carolina may have to do the same to get C.J. Stroud, a guy new quarterbacks coach Josh McCown raves about. The Panthers could also stand part and draft Richardson or Will Levis.
Levis can move too, but his arm talent and successful junior season at Kentucky is why he will be going top 10. For Richardson, his ascension to the top of some team’s draft boards has everything to do with his potential. Cam Newton was seen as raw coming out of Auburn, and he still went No. 1. Newton remains the best quarterback to ever play in Charlotte and is a total Panthers legend.
Maybe the best way to replace Newton long-term is to draft someone who can play like he did?
