Yankees news: Anthony Volpe has the perfect mentor
By Drew Koch
The latest Yankees news will bring smiles to the face of the New York faithful. Willie Randolph is working closely with prospect Anthony Volpe.
When it comes to the list of former Yankees greats to help mentor some of the organization’s top prospects, there probably wouldn’t be too many names ahead of former infielder Willie Randolph.
A veteran of 13 seasons in the Bronx, Randolph is a guest instructor at Yankees camp this spring. One player in particular who’s taken a liking to the six-time All-Star is New York’s top prospect Anthony Volpe.
Yankees news: Anthony Volpe has the perfect mentor in Willie Randolph
While much of the Yankees news this spring has been focused on a possible position change for reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge, and the constant trade chatter surrounding Gleyber Torres, this information will be quite welcome.
According to The Athletic (subscription required), Anthony Volpe has been listening to almost everything Yankees great Willie Randolph has said to him during spring training.
Volpe is considered the Yankees top prospect by almost every outlet. MLB Pipeline ranks Volpe as the team’s top prospect and as the No. 5 prospect in all of baseball.
Volpe is competing with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Oswald Peraza for the right to be call the Yankees Opening Day shortstop. Volpe is also receiving time at second base as well.
New York has stayed out of the offseason signing frenzy surrounding the shortstop market the past two winters. While players like Dansby Swanson, Carlos Correa, and Trea Turner have been inking multi-million dollar deals, the Yankees have maintained their assertion that Volpe is the future at shortstop.
Having Willie Randolph as a mentor certainly won’t hurt. Look for Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to continue to battle throughout spring training as all three are vying for a spot on the New York Yankees Opening Day roster.
