MLB news: Rougned Odor to the Padres

The San Diego Padres signed Rougned Odor to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training this week. Odor is a very odd signing considering that San Diego already had plenty of depth across the infield with what feels like a dozen shortstops.

But Odor is consistently praised as being a good clubhouse guy, and A.J. Preller continues to bring in several former Rangers from his time as the assistant GM in Arlington, Texas.Ā This is an extremely low-risk move on the part of Preller and Friars.

Speaking of the Padres, former San Diego outfielder Jurickson Profar is probably kicking himself about now for not having picked up his player option during the offseason. The 30-year-old remains unsigned after turning down $7.5M to remain in Southern California for the 2023 season.

According to Robert Murray, not only does Profar remain unsigned, but it sounds as if he’s nowhere close to landing a major league deal anytime soon. Might it take an injury during spring training to see Profar ink a new deal?

Murray mentioned that the Milwaukee Brewers as a possible fit after Tyron Taylor went down with an injury. But instead, Milwaukee signed former Cincinnati Reds outfielder Tyler Naquin to a minor league deal.
